Where’s Ryan Gosling? The Oscar-nominated “Half Nelson” star, was a surprise entry on the Oscar slate. But he’s been pretty much MIA from the campaign circuit. He wasn't even at the prestigious and essential campaign stop - the Oscar Nominees Luncheon - this week. Even Peter O'Toole showed up for that. Doesn't Ryan want to win?According to Bonnie Abaunza of Amnesty International, Ryan is in Uganda scouting locations for “The Lord’s Resistance Army,” a film about child soldiers in East Africa. Gosling’s producing the film, co-writing the script, will direct and star in it. With him in Uganda are child soldier expert Jimmy Briggs, author of “Innocents Lost,” and John Prendergast, D.C-based senior advisor to the International Crisis Group. He’s the guy who took Angelina Jolie on her first trip to the eastern Congo in 2003 and helped George Clooney recently appear at the United Nations to seek help for Darfur’s thousands of dead and millions of displaced civil war victims.While there, they visited some hospitals and aid centers funded by Nic Cage’s $2.5 million contribution to help rehabilitate child soldiers. Yesterday morning, Bonnie got a frantic call from Ryan, Jimmy and John asking for her help.

At one hospital, the trio met a 3-year-old girl whose village had been attacked and destroyed by the child soldiers in the Lord’s Resistance Army. “She had been thrown into a fire to burn to death. But she managed to wriggle out. The child soldiers grabbed her, wrapped her in a rug and threw her back in. But she managed to crawl out again, stay hidden in the brush and survive. She was just 18 months old. She’s still alive but is horribly burned. The carpet is embedded in her head. "She has a cerebral infection and is in terrible pain with every movement and every breath,” says Abaunza. She cannot grow because her skin is so scarred. The brave little girl needs more help than the Doctors Without Borders can provide and her only hope now is to get to the US and be given long-term treatment at a Burn Center." Ryan, Jimmie and John are determined to get her out of Uganda and flown to the US for specialized care and Bonnie is trying to arrange airfare and medical care as fast as she can. So if you wonder where the Oscar-nommed actor has been during the fabulous frenzied awards season, that’s what he's been up to. Freaking inspiring, isn't it?

'Nelson' acclaim gooses Gosling

Ryan Gosling, 26, has earned his first Oscar nomination playing a crack-addled high school teacher in Half Nelson, a tiny movie with massive critical acclaim. The Canadian actor, who romances his Notebook honey, Rachel McAdams, 30, in real life, does little press. But the surprise recognition got him talking to USA TODAY's Donna Freydkin:

Q: You said, when picking up your breakthrough award at the National Board of Review gala, that the award finally stopped your mom from worrying about your career choice. How’s she handling the fact that you're an Oscar contender?

A: It has taken this reverse effect, where she's crying more now that I've been nominated than she would have if I hadn’t.

Q: What does it all mean to you, given that the movie is such an underdog?

A: I couldn't be more grateful. It's so encouraging to see a film this small being acknowledged at this level, because these are the kinds of movies I want to make and the kinds of movies I want to see. I have such respect for all those actors.

Q: And unlike most of them, you've done barely any press to promote the film.A: It's a total surprise because we haven't had to do any of that. We didn't have the money to promote the film, so we just got so much goodwill from the critics and people who have a voice.Q: I assume you're taking your mom, sister and girlfriend to the Oscars?

A: I hope so. I hope they can make it. I hope they're not busy that night. Can I bring three?

Q: You've played a crackhead and a Jewish neo-Nazi. What are you up to next?

A: I'm going to do this film that I wrote and that I'm going to direct in Africa, called The Lord's Resistance, about the Lord's Resistance army of child soldiers in Uganda.

Q: Wow, intense. How do you relax?

A: I knit. Yeah. I really do. I knit scarves. I bake.

"I got sick," Gosling starts to say in this week's special Oscar issue of Entertainment Weekly. "I went to the doctor, and after talking me he said I wasn't sick. He pulled out his prescription pad and wrote down: "Try a light comedy."

The Academy has a soft spot for people portraying addicts, but Ryan Gosling's work in Half Nelson — in which he plays Dan Dunne, a high school teacher and barely functioning crack addict — carries none of the grandstanding that plagues the form. Instead, he turns Dunne into an exhausted shell, hollowed out by hangovers and barely able to muster a facial expression. The actor's greatest success comes in finding the balance between competence and collapse: The character still has to go to work, coach girls' basketball, function around his family. Wiping his nose on his collar, clapping his hands constantly in an effort to stay awake, Gosling adopts a dry, recalcitrant demeanor that's both seductive and heartbreaking — Dunne may be disappearing, but it's impossible to let him go. —Whitney Pastorek.

Half a lifetime ago, a lanky 13-year-old Cornwall boy beat out 17,000 other hopefuls for a role in the 1990s revival of the Mickey Mouse Club TV show.
Now Ryan Gosling, 26, has defied the odds again by being nominated for an Academy Award as best actor. Mr. Gosling was picked yesterday for his role in Half Nelson, in which he plays an inner-city school teacher hiding his drug addiction.
"I have tremendous respect for all the actors in this category and it's a great honour to be in their company," Mr. Gosling told the Citizen in a statement. "It's extremely encouraging to see a small film be recognized at this level. By recognizing me, I feel that it honours everyone I love and for that I am truly grateful."

Born in London, Ont., Mr. Gosling began his showbiz career performing with his older sister, Mandi Gosling, at weddings and talent shows in Cornwall. He also sang with the S, D, & G Vocal Ensemble there before moving to Florida for the Disney series. Ms. Gosling said yesterday that the nomination will not change her brother. "He's really not affected by Hollywood glamour, maybe because he started so young," she said in an interview from New York City.
"He's excited to be recognized for the work he has put in, but he's very good about keeping it all in perspective. At the end of the day, this is really not what his life is about." He called my mother and he called me, and he said, 'I don't really have a lot of time, but we're going to the Oscars.' " Added Ms. Gosling: "I'm so proud of him, regardless on what happens on Feb. 25th (Oscar night)."

As a nominee, Mr. Gosling is definitely a dark horse -- just as he was when he joined a Mickey Mouse cast that included future singing stars Christina Aguilera, Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake and JC Chasez of *NSYNC, as well as Keri Russell of TV's Felicity. He once got in trouble on the set for giving Ms. Spears and Ms. Aguilera some candid, but misguided, information on sexual positions. In the best actor category, Mr. Gosling is up against Forest Whitaker, who is widely expected to win for his portrayal of African dictator Idi Amin in The Last King of Scotland, as well as sentimental favourite Peter O'Toole in Venus. The other nominees are Leonardo DiCaprio for his role as a smuggler in Blood Diamond and Will Smith in The Pursuit of Happyness.

Mr. Gosling became a teen pin-up in for his 1997 role as smooth-talking hypochondriac Sean Hanlon in Breaker High, a half-hour series about a high school set on a cruise ship. His rugged good looks and offbeat charm won him more young fans when he was cast as Young Hercules in 1998-99. Asked about his heartthrob status and legions of adoring female fans in a 2003 interview, Mr. Gosling laughed and said, "They need to get glasses." He went to high school in Burlington, Ont., and was so self-conscious and shy that he would sometimes skip class picture day. "I didn't want to be judged," he said in one interview. At school, Mr. Gosling often got into fights. "The truth is I picked most of those fights. I just lost most of them. I told my mother I got beat up just to get some sympathy. It really wasn't so bad." Mr. Gosling's high school grades were average at best, but he was close to several faculty members, including his history, world religion, and auto shop teachers.
The only son born to Donna, a hospital worker, and Thomas, a paper mill employee, he grew up "thinking about normal kid stuff, like being an astronaut or police officer."

Patrick Cook, owner and dance instructor of Magoo's Dance Company in Cornwall, where Mr. Gosling took lessons in hip hop, street jazz and other dance styles for two years, remembers his student as a born performer. "He's a natural. He just wanted to be on stage," Mr. Cook said.
"He was wonderful back then and we knew he was going to make it." Mr. Cook's wife, Shana Cook, who is director of the dance studio, remembers the day she knew Mr. Gosling had made it big. She was standing in line at the supermarket checkout and saw his photo. "Holy Crap," she thought. "He's in the Enquirer!"
"We never knew he'd become this famous," she said. "He's a sweetheart. For me, it's hard to see him grown up and in movies. He was a natural at acting." Mr. Gosling's last Mickey Mouse Club episodes were broadcast in 1996, after which he played a British foundling in an episode of The Road to Avonlea that brought him a Gemini Award nomination. Mr. Gosling made the transition to the big screen in 2000, playing a football player in the integration drama Remember the Titans. He caught the attention of film critics with a powerful performance as a Jewish neo-Nazi in the fact-based The Believer, the 2001 Grand Jury Prize winner at the Sundance Film Festival. In 2002, he played a murderous teen trying to outwit an FBI agent (Sandra Bullock) in Murder By Numbers. Hollywood tabloids claimed that he and the older Ms. Bullock were lovers, but both denied that they were involved romantically.

In 2004, he played the romantic lead opposite fellow Canadian Rachel McAdams in The Notebook, the role that launched his mainstream movie career. He and Ms. McAdams began a relationship during the filming and have said they will marry next year. Known to some of his friends as Opie, Mr. Gosling is an accomplished jazz guitarist. He picked up his love of music from his father, who plays the piano. Mr. Gosling is a celebrity with a social conscience. He is involved with the ONE Campaign, which works to help the poorest people of the world overcome AIDS and extreme poverty. He has has travelled to Darfur and New Orleans to assist in relief efforts. Mr. Gosling is also an animal-rights activist, and wrote a letter to Kentucky Fried Chicken on behalf of PETA, urging the company to improve its treatment of animals.

Canadian Actor A Dark Horse For Oscar Nomination

For film buffs it's almost as fun as predicting who'll win an Oscar: guessing which dark horses will make it into the running for one and perhaps even emerge victorious on Hollywood's big night.
Each year there are a few surprises when nominations are announced - inevitably some performances and films are overlooked, while others are given surprise nods.
Take last year's Academy Award winner for best picture: Crash. The ensemble drama about racial tensions in Los Angeles didn't make a big splash at the theatre, and wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe - a key indicator of which films will go on to receive Oscar nominations. It beat out heavy favourite Brokeback Mountain for the biggest prize of the night.
Again this year there are a host of films the Globes didn't touch that movie fans and critics are speculating could make the cut next Tuesday when Oscar nominations are announced.
Among them: Half Nelson, a bleak film about an idealistic teacher who becomes addicted to crack. Playing the teacher is talented Canadian actor Ryan Gosling, who made it big in the film The Notebook.
The London, Ont.-born performer received critical plaudits for the role and was centred out by several critics' associations at the end of 2006 for his work in the film. But whether that acclaim translates into an Academy Award nomination for the young star remains to be seen.
The small budget film's co-director Ryan Fleck says all the buzz about the film, "is exciting but we didn't make the movie with event stuff in mind."
If Gosling is nominated, he'll likely compete against odds-on favourite Forest Whitaker, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Peter O'Toole.
Other films that could receive attention next week include the adultery drama Little Children, the futuristic infertility tale Children Of Men, and September 11 drama United 93. The latter was named best picture of the year by New York film critics, but it wasn't nominated for a Golden Globe.
Clint Eastwood could also be feted for his ambitious work in releasing companion World War II films, relaying the battle of Iwo Jima from the American and Japanese perspectives. Flags of our Fathers told the American side, while Letters from Iwo Jima represented the Japanese side of the fight.
The latter is being considered for best film in a foreign language - it won the Golden Globe in that category Monday - leading the director to joke that as a foreign director he should learn a foreign language.
A Canadian film - director Deepa Mehta's Water - made the short list in that category, and it could end up competing with Eastwood's film if both are nominated next week.
As for what chance these dark horse films have of coming up on top - as past underdog winners Shakespeare In Love and Rocky prove, nothing is certain on Oscar night.

Helping Hollywood get serious about Africa, after advising the Clinton administration, John Prendergast moved on to movies.

"He and actor Ryan Gosling — a possible Oscar contender for his role in "Half Nelson" — are working on a script about child soldiers in Uganda and are planning a trip there in the coming weeks. Prendergast said he also hopes to have a website (called Enough!.com) online in February about the challenges facing the world in regards to Africa."

Among the endless lineup of speeches, Ryan Gosling’s was particularly charming. After accepting the breakthrough performance award from his “Half Nelson” co-star, Shareeka Epps, he talked about his mother and her anguish over his decision to become an actor.
“I did a film called ‘The Believer,’” Mr. Gosling said, “and she watched 10 minutes. She started crying and locked herself in the bathroom.” The NBR award, he added, made his mother “think she didn’t do such a bad job, so more than anything, thanks to the National Board of Review for making my mother happy, getting her off my back.”

The better 'Half Nelson'

(SAG-nominated film triumphed over troubled production)

"Half Nelson" with Philip Seymour Hoffman as the teacher, half the budget and no distributor?The little secret of the year's indie-film success story is that, for a long time, it looked like a failure. Investors fell out, buyers got cold feet and its twentysomething filmmaking team scrambled to write, helm and edit their first feature.
But the plucky indie has stayed on the radar, quietly winning slots on critics' top 10 lists and, as of Jan. 4, a lead-actor SAG nom for star Ryan Gosling.
Even the film's origins were a roll of the dice: Writer-directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (who are also a couple) wrote and shot scenes around songs from Canadian mood-rock band Broken Social Scene -- even before they tried to get the band's approval.
Luckily, the rockers agreed to license the songs for next to nothing.
Other snags arose before production.
The $800,000 budget had producer Jamie Patricof of Hunting Lane Films and a private-equity investor sharing the costs. But the investor dropped out, leaving the film without half its budget just weeks away from shooting. Patricof rustled in indie producers like Charlie Corwin and Paul Mezey to get the coin in under the wire.
Gosling -- who worked for scale and is regarded by many as the movie's most powerful asset -- wasn't even supposed to be in the film.
His character, an idealistic but drug-addled teacher, was written as a 35-year-old -- which is why Hoffman and Mark Ruffalo were sent the script. Gosling's reading persuaded the filmmakers to rewrite the role.
Selling the movie wasn't any easier. Despite buzz after its Sundance screening, buyers were nervous about distribbing a movie about a crack-addict teacher.
Miramax came close, but the sides couldn't agree on a price, and other distribs hemmed and hawed. That left ThinkFilm, which despite having limited funds, made an impassioned pitch that landed the pic.
ThinkFilm developed an unorthodox release strategy for the pic, gambling first on an August release to beat the fall glut of prestige pics. It made Gosling and Fleck the centerpiece of the promo campaign, pitching the movie as an early chance to see new talent. And, perhaps most significantly, it never, ever, mentioned drugs in any of its literature.
The logic: "If we had focused on the subject matter it would have kept the film in a ghetto," says ThinkFilm's U.S. distribution prexy Mark Urman.
Of course, how much it got out of the ghetto remains a question.
"Half Nelson" is one of those movies whose box office everyone has an opinion on -- its nearly $3 million to date has some shouting success but others wondering if, given the buzz, it could have taken in more.
As for its kudo campaign, ThinkFilm is circumspect about how much it's spending; it has taken out print ads and reacts strategically to every new bump in interest, like Gosling's SAG nom last week, which prompted it to spend a piece of its preciously small budget on a table at the ceremony and an ad in the guide.
ThinkFilm hopes it can stretch its few dollars by being creative. "If you start spending, you stop thinking," Urman says. And the exec consoles himself with his mission." Of all the awards candidates out there, only two movies are indie films -- "Little Miss Sunshine" and "Half Nelson," he says. "Both went into Sundance indie. And only one came out indie."

DREAM NIGHT IN NEW YORK

By Donna Freydkin, USA TODAYNEW YORK — While Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett held court with the Babel crowd on the West Coast Saturday, the gang from The Departed reunited on the East Coast, where director Martin Scorsese was among honorees at Sunday's New York Film Critics Circle bash.Yes, the winners were announced beforehand, but the star power and lighthearted fun at the Supper Club gala compensated for the lack of mystery.
"Who cares what Simon Cowell has to say?" joked Dreamgirls' Jennifer Hudson (and American Idol castoff) as she accepted the award for best supporting actress. Robin Williams brought down the house when he deadpanned, "I accept this on behalf of all gay penguins." Williams, who accepted the award for best animated film, Happy Feet, even poked fun at his recent stint in rehab, saying from the podium: "No wine at the table!"
Departed's Matt Damon was on hand as a presenter, and another Departed star — Leonardo DiCaprio — was a surprise attendee at the soiree. Mark Wahlberg rounded out the cast, noting from the red carpet: "If a guy like Marty calls, you show up. I hope it's his year (for the Oscar). I'm going to vote for him; he's my guy!"
The Last King of Scotland's brutal dictator and best-actor winner, Forest Whitaker, was an early arrival, long before the entrance of Half Nelson's drug-addled teacher Ryan Gosling, whose movie earned accolades as best first feature.
On her arrival, Hudson admitted her win brought tears to her eyes when she found out. "If I can make it in New York, I can make it anywhere," she said from the red carpet, where Williams was as animated as he was at the podium. Williams earned giggles when he spoke French to a Canadian TV crew, expounding on topics such as the Rosie O'Donnell/Donald Trump feud.
The New York win was especially significant for director Paul Greengrass, whose United 93 took best-film honors. The film tells the story of the hijacked plane that crashed in Pennsylvania on Sept. 11, 2001. On the red carpet, he said, "If anyone would hold this movie to account, it's the city of New York."

No Satellite Award for Half Nelson...UNFAIR!

Unfortunately Ryan Gosling didn't get any Satellite Award yesterday, neither did Half Nelson. These were the results:

Best Motion Picture: The Departed

Best drama and motion picture: Dreamgirls

Best director: Bill Condon (Dreamgirls) who tied for that honor with Clint Eastwood for "Flags of our Fathers"

Best supporting actor: Jennifer Hudson

Best actor in supporting role: Leonardo Dicaprio

Best adapted screenplay for William Monahan

Best dramatic acting honors went to Helen Mirren for "The Queen" and Forest Whitaker for "The Last King of Scotland.

Top comedy acting awards went to Meryl Streep for "The Devil Wears Prada" and Joseph Cross for "Running with Scissors."

Other awards included: Best foreign language film, "Volver"; animated or mixed media, "Pan's Labyrinth"; documentary, "Deliver Us from Evil.""Flags of Our Fathers" also earned awards for cinematography and art direction and production design.

In the TV categories, "House" and "Ugly Betty" were named top dramatic and comedy series.

RYAN GOSLING: AN UN-HOLLYWOOD STAR

Ryan Gosling drips out his words like a shower head in an old apartment building with dismal water pressure.
He’s the type to start a sentence three different ways and interrupt its progress with a breathy sigh at midpoint. Strains of thought are cut off before they get going. Pauses linger two beats longer than suitably comfortable.
It’s easy to imagine him there, on the other end of the phone at his place in Los Angeles, rubbing his pained eyes the way the coke-head teacher he plays in “Half Nelson” does so many times during history class.

Is it necessary to talk about the “Mickey Mouse Club” again?
Yes, he was there, with Britney and Christina and Justin. No, he’s not still in touch with them. That was a long time ago, it was a fine experience, left him with a hefty work ethic, etc., etc., etc.
Gosling has been called “the most exciting actor of his generation,” but his is a career shaped by the fact that he finds so much of the Hollywood movie machinery intolerable. The part where industry executives demand return on investments, for instance, or the requirement that leading characters be sympathetic ones. The answering of questions from a faceless journalist in an interview arranged by his agent, perhaps.
“I’m not a salesman,” Gosling says. And that’s true.
He’s a 25-year-old high school dropout whose mother home-schooled him for the fifth grade because he was having so much trouble in class. The “Mickey Mouse Club” thing came from an on-a-whim audition that led to two seasons on the show, which led to roles in other television series and a life away from the Ontario, Canada, town where most of his male relatives still work in a paper mill.
Then it just took off. One role, then another, then another, and suddenly he has been acting for half his life. Critics took note after his performance as a Jewish neo-Nazi in “The Believer” (2001). Teen magazines showed interest three years later when he turned up as a lovelorn woodworker in “The Notebook,” a teary romance based on the Nicholas Sparks novel.

But even after such success, Gosling, whose ability to inhabit a role is almost visceral, was more than a little uncertain he was born for a life on screen. With “Half Nelson,” an independent film written by a pair of first-time moviemakers, whispers of Oscar nominations began before the film saw its first paying audience.
Has he concluded, now, that he’s in the right career?
“Maybe at the moment,” he says flatly. “I think people can do all kinds of things, you know?”
What he has done so far is land a series of substantial roles almost sure to prevent him from becoming an American sweetheart. There’s the neo-Nazi, of course, then a teenage killer in “Murder by Numbers” (2002) and a juvenile delinquent in “The United States of Leland” (2003). In “Half Nelson,” he’s an inspiring charmer of a teacher, but one wracked by disillusionment and addiction, careless enough to hit the crack pipe in the girls’ locker room and be discovered by a student as he convulses against a bathroom stall.
It’s not that Gosling isn’t getting offers to act in potential blockbusters or that he’s philosophically opposed to big-budget films, it’s just that — well, maybe he is philosophically opposed to big-budget films. “I understand the studios, in the sense that if they’re going to spend $100 million on a film, they want to make sure they’re gonna get that back ... but I don’t know how to guarantee you you’re going to make that money back, and I’m uncomfortable working with those kind of numbers.”

He is thinking of directing now, taking a turn on the other side of the camera. Will he continue to perform as well?
“Yeah, we’ll see.”
And the satisfaction he does derive from acting, this endeavor that has won him such acclaim: “I’m sure it would be hard to articulate.”

The Critics Choice Nominations has been announced today, nominating Ryan Gosling into the category for Best Actor along with actors like Leonardo Dicaprio or Will Smith. Shareeka Epps has been also nominated for best young actress.

The Broadcast Film Critics announced their nominations for The 12th Annual Critics' Choice Awards today. The awards are bestowed annually by the Broadcast Film Critics Association to honor the finest in cinematic achievement.
The winners will be revealed at the 12th annual Critics' Choice Awards ceremony on January 12th at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium, which will be broadcast on E! on January 20th, 2007.
Variety posted the following,
"Babel," "The Departed," "Dreamgirls" and "Little Miss Sunshine" tied with seven noms each -- including the top feature award -- as the Broadcast Film Critics announced its nominees for the org's 12th Critics Choice Award.
The other nominees for 2006's top pic are "Blood Diamond," "Letters From Iwo Jima," "Little Children," "Notes on a Scandal," "The Queen" and "United 93."
Two "firsts" highlight the categories: Leonardo Dicaprio became the first thesp to score two noms in the actor category -- for "Departed" and "Blood Diamond" -- and "Letters From Iwo Jima" is the first pic to snare nominations in both the picture and foreign-language film categories. Other noteworthy noms include "Apocalypto" for foreign-language film and Robert Altman's last pic, "A Prairie Home Companion," for acting ensemble.
Joining DiCaprio in the actor category are Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson"), Peter O'Toole ("Venus"), Will Smith ("The Pursuit of Happyness") and Forest Whitaker ("The Last King of Scotland").

Will Ryan be nominated for a National Board award?

National Board of Review unveils winners tomorrow

Most pundits claim that "Dreamgirls" or "The Queen" will be voted best picture by the National Board of Review when it unveils winners on Wednesday. Those choices would be in sync with past honorees like "Moulin Rouge!" (voters love musicals) and "Sense and Sensibility" (they're suckers for everything British).
But those two pix have a serious shot at winning the top Oscar. Time and again NBR voters have demonstrated that they like to go their own way, sometimes drastically so, picking "Quills" and "Gods and Monsters." NBR likes to give underdogs a push. Its support certainly helped "Moulin Rouge!" earn the second-most Oscar noms and "Monsters" to win the screenplay Oscar for Bill Condon (now "Dreamgirls'" director/writer).
Voters adore films with literary appeal, so "Little Children" and "The Painted Veil" should be considered seriously. Being based in Marty Scorsese's New York, NBR could give "The Departed" the edge. Surely, they'll give their best-actor prize to Ryan Gosling ("Half Nelson") since they like to go indie rebel in that race. There's a remote possibility they could even vote "Nelson" best pic, but it's not backed by a major studio. That could hurt its chances there. NBR voters like to spread the kudos wealth, giving every top studio something so that they'll all attend the awards ceremony. Little Think Films will already be getting the actors' trophy. Dreamgirl Jennifer Hudson will certainly win best breakthrough performance or best supporting actress.
Remember, NBR is not a film-critics' prize. It's really like an Enlightened People's Choice Award, bestowed by a society of sophisticated film fans who are teachers, lawyers, journalists, dentists, etc.

The rising Canadian star has been widely praised for his contribution to the movie, in which he stars as a drug-addicted teacher who forms a special bond with one of his students. Director Ryan Fleck praised the 26-year-old actor's quiet intensity, saying his "potential to erupt at any moment" was thrilling to watch. And on Wednesday Ryan joined a roll call of talent - including his co-star Shareeka Epps, who collected a best breakthrough actor trophy - to see the production presented with best film and best director honours. The Gotham Awards, which recognise low budget, independent films, also honoured Kate Winslet and Edward Norton. Tim Robbins received a humanitarian tribute, while the eclectic cast of Babel, starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, won best ensemble.Half Nelson, which was produced on a budget of £500,000, beat off stiff competition from Sofia Coppola's revolutionary romp Marie Antoinette and Martin Scorcese's £46-million The Departed.

Ryan Gosling: The In Contention Interview

Ryan Gosling is a smooth customer. Lacking pretension so much that one can’t even find a hint of his intending to steer clear of it, the actor recently celebrated his 26th birthday on November 12th. This following a year that has seen his directorial debut come to pre-production light, a coveted spot amongst GQ’s annual “Men of the Year” issue and, oh yeah, one of the most acclaimed performances of 2006.
The critically hailed star of “The Believer” and “The Notebook,” Gosling finds himself in the thick of the year’s awards race for his riveting portrayal in Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck’s “Half Nelson.” The film received five Independent Film Spirit award nominations this morning, including Best Male Lead for Gosling.
Greeting me via telephone from Toronto, where he is nearing the end of principle photography on Craig Gillespe’s “Lars and the Real Girl,” the actor seems to have tripped over his sister’s computer chord and is having some trouble with the usual “hellos.” It’s all for the best, really, because when you have a conversation with Ryan Gosling, the last thing you want to do is bog things down in formalities. Gosling is a real guy, attracted to real ideas and, above all else, real characters.
“I had read the script and thought it was about people I had met, people I knew or was like in some way,” he says. “When I go to the movies, I want to feel like I’ve met someone. People who do things out of character, who don’t have a clear character arc, those are the people I’m interested in seeing in a film.”
In “Half Nelson,” Gosling stars as Dan Dunne, a charismatic junior high school history teacher in a drab and dismal Brooklyn neighborhood. Dan’s professional environment is one of enlightenment for his pupils. He captures the spark of their educational hunger and even finds time to coach the girls’ basketball team. But personal demons can haunt even the saintliest of souls, and Dan’s crutch is drug addiction. The allure of the crack pipe frequently pulls him away from the buoyancy he works so hard to construct for his students, dragging him through the realities of crushed idealism.
In some ways not the most sympathetic of individuals, Dan provided for Gosling a character of tangibility and truthfulness.
“I think you have to love and hate the characters you play,” he says. “They’re people. It’s not as simple as sympathizing with them.”
To prepare for the role, Gosling moved to New York for one month before shooting even began, immersing himself in the life of his character. He lived in a small apartment in Brooklyn and spent time shadowing 8th grade teacher David Easton. Speaking matter-of-factly about his methods, Gosling mentions, “There’s a million ways to get there, but it’s a challenge when there’s no real reference for the people you play.”
What might also be considered a challenge for some actors is sharing the screen with untrained thespians. But Gosling seems to have found a preference of sorts, so much so that he plans on casting his upcoming directorial debut, “The Lord’s Resistance,” with non-actors across the board.
“I love working with non-actors,” he says. “Actors are so manipulative, and non-actors are not. They push you in ways that the best actors in the world can’t.”
One such non-actor is Shareeka Epps, receiving equal praise for her portrayal of Drey in the film. One of Dan’s students who happens upon his secret early in the first act, Drey seems weathered and accustomed for her years, but exuberant and youthful all the same – qualities Gosling also found bursting out of his co-star.
“Shareeka has no reverence, which I really respected,” he explains. “She doesn’t approach any scene with any preciousness. She’s brutally honest and not ashamed of how she feels.”
Finding himself in the heat of contention for Best Actor consideration at this year’s Oscar ceremony, Gosling is predictably apathetic about the awards process. One almost doesn’t want to approach the subject with him, given the expected response from an actor so obviously concerned with the work above anything else. But this is a business of sound bites, and even the most apprehensive awards hopefuls can give you gold in that regard.
“It affects me,” he says of the Oscar race, “in the sense that I’m happy that a film that cost $500,000 can get to a point where this many people are aware of it. Awards – I don’t know who that’s up to, but I appreciate that the film is being received the way it is. I had one of the best experiences of my life on this. We never had to hit any marks. We never had to say anything twice or worry about continuity. You never felt like you were in a scene in a movie. A lot of directors never see it that way. Anna and Ryan have a great eye for the way that we are and the lies we tell about who we are, and that’s rare.”
From here, Gosling will assuredly take it all in stride. The aforementioned “The Lord’s Resistance” is high on his list of priorities. Telling the story of the Lord’s Resistance militia in Uganda, the film looks to be another pointed political entry in the current canon of Africa-centralized cinema. Even still, don’t expect the actor to look too far ahead at the kinds of films he wishes to make, in front of or behind the camera. He holds such judgment to a case-by-case basis.
“I’ll have to wait until I’m tested,” he says. “Films I love have a certain allowance for accidents. When I was a kid, my favorite films were the ‘Abbot and Costello’ movies. I love Werner Herzog’s films, Terry Malick, John Cassavettes. But I’ve got a lot of things I want to do in my life, and not just acting. There’s no anxiety about not having enough time to do all the movies I want to do or anything, but I have to keep it interesting for myself. I don’t want to make the same movie over and over again.”

The Lord's Resistance is the name of his film as a director. Such an interesting title!

5 nominations for Half Nelson in the Indie awards

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - The hit road comedy "Little Miss Sunshine" and the acclaimed drugs drama "Half Nelson" led the list of contenders on Tuesday for the Independent Spirit Awards, the American art-house world's version of the Oscars.
Each film scored five nominations, including best feature and best director. Another contender in the latter category was Robert Altman, who died last week. He was cited for his work on "A Prairie Home Companion."
Four films, none of them with much widespread name recognition, landed three nominations each: "American Gun," "The Dead Girl," "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints" and "Man Push Cart."
The Spirit Awards, in their 22nd year, honor low-budget films based on such criteria as original, provocative subject matter and degree of independent financing. Winners will be unveiled on February 24, the day before the Academy Awards.

There is usually some crossover among nominees for the two awards, but little common ground among the winners. Last year was an exception because Oscar voters recognized a slew of low-budget films, such as "Crash," "Brokeback Mountain" and "Capote," which also were honored at the Spirit Awards.
"Little Miss Sunshine," a box office smash starring Steve Carell and Greg Kinnear, revolves around a family's cross-country trip to attend a girls' beauty pageant. It marked the feature directing debut of music video veterans Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris.
Two of its stars, Alan Arkin and Paul Dano, will compete against each other for supporting male. Additionally, rookie screenwriter Michael Arndt was nominated for best first screenplay.
The searing drama "Half Nelson" stars Ryan Gosling as a drug-addicted teacher who forms a special bond with one of his high school students. Ryan Fleck was nominated for best director and first screenplay (along with co-writer Anna Boden). Gosling and Shareeka Epps were nominated for male and female lead, respectively.
Other best feature nominees were "American Gun," "The Dead Girl" and "Pan's Labyrinth." The other nominated directors were Karen Moncrieff for "The Dead Girl" and Steven Soderbergh for "Bubble."

The event is organized by Film Independent, a Los Angeles-based group that fosters indie movies.

Ryan Gosling wins an award for best actor in Stockholm Film Festival

Stockholm, Nov. 26 (AP): Director Laurie Collyer's feature debut ``Sherrybaby'' was named best picture at the 17th annual Stockholm International Film Festival, organizers said on Sunday.
Collyer won the Bronze Horse award for ``a pure and heartbreaking work about survival and dignity,'' the festival jury said.
The film, starring Maggie Gyllenhaal, follows a young woman recently released from prison who tries to reconnect with her young daughter while confronting her old life and drug abuse.
``It takes you on a desperate quest for love, through a landscape of struggle, guilt and broken dreams which at times is hard to watch yet impossible to forget,'' the jury said.
Gyllenhaal also won the Best Actress award for her performance in the film, while Ryan Gosling was named Best Actor for his part in director Ryan Fleck's ``Half Nelson.'' The festival, which ends on Sunday, showcased 170 films from nearly 40 countries.

A week later, Lars attends a family dinner with his new doll and introduces her as Bianca, his new fiancée. The family brings Lars to see a therapist but they are urged not to disrupt his disillusion. Word spreads and soon the entire town greets Bianca as a real person. She starts volunteering at the hospital and even gets elected to the local school board. Eventually, both Lars and his community find they are transformed by the bizarre reality of a doll and her surprising effect on their lives. A high-concept comedy from Craig Gillespie, director of the upcoming Mr. Woodcock.

IT'S RAINING MEN: It's not quite Time magazine, but speculation has been growing over who will make GQ's "Men of the Year" issue in December. Playing the field, the title has picked the "comic, musician and actor of our time" to appear on separate covers: Will Ferrell, Jay-Z and Leonardo DiCaprio. Lindsay Lohan is named "obsession of the year" and gives a tongue-and-cheek interview about how she wishes celebrity magazines would write more about her. (Are there enough trees?) Meanwhile, the photographs with the story show Lohan happily ripping up the pages of a tabloid.GQ's December issue also honors Pamela Anderson, who caused a traffic jam during her 40-minute photo shoot with Michael Thompson. She pretended to be hitching a ride on the Pacific Coast Highway, clad in a white bikini. Back to the men, other honorees include Stephen Colbert, Thom Browne (who was interviewed by Simon Doonan), Ryan Gosling and Burberry's Christopher Bailey as designer of the year. It's been said that Ryan has 2 pages of pictures dedicated to him, as you can see they are new pictures. He has a white shirt on with a black tie and a grey vest. He's sitting in front of a tray full of dessert(cakes, jell-o, ice cream ect..) and through several pictures it shows him playing with the food and the final pic is him smeared with cake all over is face holding a cup of coffee. Delicious!!

Review of Fracture

As you all know this film is releasing next year (27 April 2007), but it has already been pre-screened in Pasadena, it was an unfinnished pre-screening but I found a review, check it out:

"Hey Harry and Fiendish Plotters,
Hatchets chopped the freeway. They whapped into cars and hacked drivers inside. In the movie theatre, they pounded people against walls amidst blood gurgled screams. Limbs littered aisles and blood flowed at Pacific Theatres in Pasadena for a work-in-progress screening of Fracture.
Anthony Hopkins shoots his unfaithful wife in the head. The police arrive and he makes a full confession. Then he waives his right to an attorney and defends himself while deliciously gloating at how idiotic everyone else is. Ryan Gosling plays the hotshot assistant D.A. who prosecutes in his final two weeks before going to a lucrative law firm.
Hopkins is wonderful fun as the villain you root for. This is no surprise, but enjoyable nonetheless. Gosling brings sincerity and slyness but lacks gravity. Part of this is due to a miscalculation at the beginning.
The first twenty minutes are devoted solely to Hopkins. If you didn't know better you'd assume the movie was his story. However, it's really Gosling's story about how he handles the case and lets his cockiness get the better of him. The movie never fully recovers from this awkward gearshift.
This can be fixed by introducing Gosling's character earlier. Overall, Fracture needs to be trimmed by 15 to 20 minutes, some from the middle but mostly from the end. It takes WAY too long to arrive at the climatic scene.
With these changes and tightening up overall, director Gregory Hoblit (who also directed the courtroom thriller Primal Fear) should hone this into a fun movie for a weekend afternoon. It's a mystery procedural thriller that works despite a couple questionable plot points. I'm not the only one who enjoys Hopkins as a super smart nasty.
I kicked severed arms and legs away as I exited the theatre. They tumbled down concrete stairs. I hear buzz saws coming.

This description makes us want to see it now, but we have to wait a bit longer. I'm sure it's going to be another success for Ryan.

Ryan and the Oscar

There's a new article about Ryan Gosling and the Oscars, Mark Olsen talks about the amazing interpretation of Ryan in Half Nelson, but he says that Ryan is a darkhorse between all the other actors, Ryan doesn't follow everyone's step, he shines by his own, it seems quite obvious that previous Oscar winners had a lot of promotion behind their backs. But there is a hope, because we know that Ryan Gosling deserves it more than anyone.

Ryan Gosling's performance in "Half Nelson" is arguably the year's best reviewed. Yet Gosling isn't at the top of many Oscar lists. He could probably be a bigger star — a leading-man, Hollywood-actor type. Rather, with performances such as his startlingly alive turn in "Half Nelson" as a drugged-out high school teacher taking tentative first steps toward changing his life, the actor is charting a path entirely his own.

" There is this idea in Hollywood," Gosling says, "and I've seen it work for people, where the unspoken rule is 'Do two for them and one for yourself.' And that's kind of considered a fact. I've never really found that to be true for me. I've gotten more opportunities out of working on things I believed in than I ever did on things that weren't special to me."Gosling is unabashedly direct as to why he has become so specific about the roles he'll take on.

"Listen, I've done a lot. I've been working since I was 12. I worked a long time without any freedom, where I was just selling ad space on TV and saying the lines I was supposed to say and trying to please people. And it took me a long time to get to a place were I felt I could work for myself and work for the experience."

McGosling sightings

No new pictures of the most lovely couple of Hollywood. But we have a few new sightings of fans that have seen the couple around Toronto where our Ryan is actually filming.

Lora's sighting: "I was out in Toronto having dinner Saturday night and Rachel and Ryan came in looking very cute and yes, very together! We were at Xacutti on College. They sat next to each and he had his arm around her pretty much the whole time. They were there with two other girls, someone said that one was her sister but I don't know for sure."

Katy H sighting: “I had lunch with a friend at Cafe La Gaffe on Baldwin yesterday and when we arrived Rachel and Ryan were there having brunch with a few other people. They seemed very cute together, mildly cuddly but not nauseatingly so, and I was impressed with how great she looks in person.”

It must be so sweet seeing them together! Love is all around!

Rachel McAdams on Etalk

Rachel McAdams attended the Gemini awards last 19th Of October, she was interviewed by Etalk. The interviewer asked her: "Where's the man?" Rachel replied, "the man is working. He's shooting a film here in Toronto. He's bringing home the bacon and I'm doing all the glamorous stuff." She looked very happy. He then asked what she's going to do next and she said "I'm on a break but I hope to start filming in Africa soon."

"Half Nelson" is top nominee at Gotham Awards

LOS ANGELES (Hollywood Reporter) - "Half Nelson," a drama about the bond between a drug-addicted junior high school teacher and one of his students, led the list of nominees for the Gotham Awards, organizers said Monday.
The acclaimed ThinkFilm release picked up nominations for best feature, breakthrough director for Ryan Fleck, and breakthrough actor for its star, Ryan Gosling.
The event, organized by the Independent Film Project, aims to honor "authentic voices" in American movies. Winners will be announced on November 29 during a ceremony at New York's Pier Sixty at the Chelsea Piers,

Four films garnered two nominations each: Paramount Vantage's November 3 release "Babel," Fox Searchlight's "Little Miss Sunshine" and director So Yong Kim's "In Between Days," which does not yet have a domestic distributor.
In addition to "Half Nelson," the nominees for best feature were: Warner Bros. Pictures' crime thriller "The Departed"; New Line Cinema's domestic drama "Little Children"; Sony Pictures' period confection "Marie Antoinette"; and Kino International's buddy art film "Old Joy."
Other nominees for breakthrough director were: Ramin Bahrani for "Man Push Cart"; Laurie Collyer, "Sherrybaby"; So Yong Kim, "In Between Days"; and James Marsh for "The King."
Gosling's rivals for breakthrough actor were: Abigail Breslin in "Little Miss Sunshine"; Shareeka Epps, "Half Nelson"; Melinda Page Hamilton, "Sleeping Dogs Lie"; Rinko Kikuchi, "Babel"; and Channing Tatum, "A Guide to Recognizing Your Saints."
The Gotham Awards will also pay tribute to Kate Winslet and Edward Norton. Winslet is in theaters with "Little Children," while Norton starred this year in the indie features "Down in the Valley," "The Illusionist" and the upcoming "The Painted Veil."
